Augmented Reality: The latest means to decrease your Carbon footprint

Let’s start with an interesting story.

In 1888, confusion led the media to believe that the person who invented dynamite died. The newspapers read “The merchant of death is dead”. The media later apologized to the person for their mistake; however, the line “Merchant of death” would not stop haunting him. He thought he would never want the world to remember him as a merchant of death. This wasn’t the legacy he wanted to leave behind, and so he decided to do something good for the world.

Organizations are shifting to eco-friendly means in an effort to make this world a better living place. Reducing the Carbon footprint is one such step organizations are taking to leave behind a healthy legacy. Begin with basics: What is Carbon Footprint? According to WHO, a carbon footprint is a measure of the impact your activities have on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced through the burning of fossil fuels and is expressed as a weight of CO2 emissions produced in tonnes. So, for a business entity, every activity like manufacturing, factory operations, packaging, production, logistics, office operations, and even employee commute adds to the carbon footprint. Scary, right? Now, let’s look at Augmented Reality. AR is superimposing digital information into the real world. So, how does AR help reduce carbon footprint?

It’s not very difficult to deduce the fact that digital information superimposed with AR does not have a physical presence. Having no physical presence, it causes zero addition to your organization’s carbon footprint. Then is this information just good to know? Or does this have a practical implementation as well?

According to this article by IOP Science, an organization dedicated to environmental research, Using an AR smartphone app that combines comparative and detailed product information into personalized data and recommendations, a 23% reduction in carbon footprint was found for bottled water. There are many other applications of AR across Industries. How implementing AR could help in the reduction of Carbon Footprint: 1. Allowing employees to work from home through AR: Artificial reality could be used to have the in-office meeting effect with employees sitting at their homes. And by that, we don't just mean video conference, vide Star Wars, where a hologram of Yoda appears during meetings. Also, your employees can create a prototype of the products and display them to you through AR. This would significantly reduce the carbon footprints not just within your organization, but also outside as reduction in travelling to work also reduces air pollution due to fewer vehicles on road. 2. Prototype building: Materials required during the trial period of development of a product could be saved if the entire process is done through AR, thus reducing the material wastage, thereby curbing soil and water pollution. 3. Sales and Marketing: Instead of your Business Developers travelling around giving a demo of your products, you could implement AR and float it across your pipeline. Because AR can be realized in existing devices, your target customers will have no issue experiencing it at their convenience. Moreover, a single program could serve many customers. Less human travel and interaction boils down to, again, reducing carbon dependencies. 4. Ops and maintenance: AR could be used to ensure smooth functioning of the WIP and maintain flow rate and at the same time detect and warn about any malfunctions, thereby ensuring the safety of your industry and employees. Well, these are just some things to start with. It may seem overwhelming, but once you dive-in, it would seem really easy! The best part about AR is that it’s easily implementable and scalable on already existing devices (another reason for reducing carbon footprint!) at a cost as low as a lakh.
